The Three Counties Laser and Skin Clinic is based at the Plastic Surgery Unit of Bedford Hospital NHS Trust. Laser treatment was introduced here in 1991 to form a centre of clinical and academic excellence.
The Plastic Surgery Unit is purpose built and offers a wide range of life-changing specialist treatments for skin conditions affecting adults and children.
The unit has modern surgical theatres, with full general anaesthetic facilities available allowing laser treatment for all ages and general plastic surgery to be performed in a dedicated clinical setting.
The laser treament centre at the Plastic Surgery Unit unit is seen as a beacon of best clinical practice. Its clinical team founded the British Skin Laser Group to promote advances in laser skin treatment. In recognition of Bedford's leading role in the field, the British Medical Laser Association (BMLA) held their 2011 annual conference at Bedford and in 2012 the two groups merged under the BMLA name.
In terms of academic excellence, the centre is at the forefront of peer-reviewed publication and often presents at national and international conferences.
The centre often hosts visiting clinicians from the UK and overseas who are aiming to achieve similar levels of excellence in their own practice. The clinicians at the centre contribute to the setting of national standards for laser operating training, run educational courses and lead a number of research programmes.
